From across the classroom Andrew Miller may seem to be your average college student but there is much more to him than your eyes perceive. Andrew, a full-time student studying Biological Sciences, is anything but ordinary. In fact, he is a very nurturing individual with a love for animals and his family.

When Andrew was asked what he likes to do in his free time he mentioned that he enjoys going to the local animal shelters to spend time with the animals. Most people would overlook such a casual comment, but I decided to dive deeper. Not only does he own five dogs and five cats, but he is also taking care of two baby kittens now. This intrigued me since he obviously has a love for animals but what brings someone to have such a nurturing nature?
When asked I was informed that he grew up with his two sisters and his parents that weren’t all that great, so he found himself taking care of his sister with special needs and spending a lot of time with his grandfather. His grandfather, Donald L. Miller, an author of history books, has won a few awards as well. Andrew has enjoyed spending as much quality time with him as he can; involving playing basketball with him and traveling with him as an assistant to places like Mexico, Haiti, Jamaica, and Florida. Andrew’s favorite place that he has visited is in fact Haiti since he was able to go to some of the impoverished areas and get a different view of the world and a better appreciation of life in a country where we have more than others.
I can now conclude that what brings someone like Andrew to have such a nurturing nature is the sole fact that he has such strong family values and even though growing up in his household may not have been the best, it seems that it did push him to be the caring individual he is now.
